History

The beginning of OYCF was very simple. It grew out of the desire by a new generation of Chinese students in the U.S. around the turn of the 21st century "to exchange views on social, economic, political and cultural issues concerning China and to develop common aspirations through regular discussions.” (Preamble to OYCF bylaw)

The first OYCF meeting took place in Concord, New Hampshire in 1999. It established several principles that the OYCFers still embrace today, including "volunteerism," "grounded idealism" and "self-education."  Since then, OYCF has crossed many milestones and evolved into an organization that prides itself on its openness, inclusiveness, and its ability to bridge the academic, professional, business and non-profit organizations. Its activities have enriched the lives of OYCF members, and they have helped to improve the exchange between China and the outside world.

Select Past Research Activities

OYCF members edited and published two books in Chinese, one on China's rural problems (2006) and the other on social stratification in China (2010), based on the papers presented at the OYCF annual meetings in 2005 and 2006.

From 2002 to 2007, OYCF joined hands with San Francisco-based 1990 Institute to establish a cooperative fellowship program to support research on China's economic and social policies. Projects receiving the OYCF-1990 Institute Research Fellowship support included public policy issues such as "rural taxation," "local governance and income disparity," "long term care for the elders," "village elections and taxation," and "labor training and poverty alleviation."
